New Song KIDS Celebrate the Advent Season

The children of New Song Community Church led the congregation in worship on December 11 during a special kid’s program to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

The children, ranging in age from kindergarten through third grade, recited scripture verses from memory and sang traditional Christmas hymns. The program was narrated by Luke, age 15, who contributed a voice recording that set the stage for the program by speaking about the world’s need to be rescued by the Messiah.

Katie Weber and Nina Green Wiebalk, who lead the church’s Sunday school program New Song KIDS, spent months preparing the children for their big moment on the stage.

“We didn’t want Sunday school to be just your average Sunday school,” said Weber, who created the script for the kids’ advent program. “We wanted it to be what God wanted it to look like. Thank you all for helping us to raise kingdom kids.”

The children did not disappoint. With the congregation watching on, the children recited their memorized scripture verses from the Books of John, Isaiah, and Luke and sang the songs “Joy to the World” and “Go Tell it on a Mountain.”

Roslyn, age 9, began the story with Luke 2: 4-7 (ESV):

“And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.”

Tyler, age 7, continued the narrative with Luke 2: 8-13 (ESV)

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosting praising God and saying…”

Lincoln and Zoey, both age 5, stepped forward to answer “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased” (Luke 2:14).

Finally, 8-year-old Daniel rounded out the scripture readings with Luke 2: 4-:20 (ESV):

“When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.’ And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, laying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told to them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told to them.”

All throughout the special advent program, the children embodied the words of Jesus, who said, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14 ESV).
