| Evangelism -- Keith Pusateri (P.A.T. member) | "We Win the Lost" |
Congratulations go out to all those who recently completed the Becoming a
Contagious Christian class at the end of October. These members of our
congregation, who have now committed themselves to share their faith through
building relationships, are now better prepared to witness for Christ in their
everyday lives. We as a Church are called and challenged to be
ready to care and share in this way as we move onto the new Church property.
Please consider accepting this challenge and serving the Lord in this way as He
will bring family, friends, and residents of the local communities to visit us
at our new facility.
As God's Word teaches in 1 Peter 3:15 "Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you
have."
As Christians who are commissioned by Jesus Christ to reach out to those who
don't know Him, we need to be educated in practical ways to do this. Another
Becoming a Contagious Christian class will be offered in Spring 2005 so get
signed up and learn more about how to be more effective at reaching others for
Christ.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to the
co-facilitators on the Contagious Christian class project. Thank you Gary
Opferman for your efforts after long work days and while battling illness. Thank
you also for lending you electronics expertise. Thank you Kelly Kurpecky for
assistance in teaching the personal testimony parts of the class as well as the
tremendous time and effort given to put the class presentation in Power Point
format. Ministry effectiveness is greatly multiplied when we work as a team.
Thank you for being on my team for this important teaching.

Thank you to Tammy, Ken and Tanner Morehead and all those who helped with the
October 23 "Hot Dog Roast". It was a wonderful night of fun and
fellowship. Be sure to read Cathy Opferman’s article for all the fun details.
Coming soon is our Annual Business and Blessings Meeting scheduled for February
19th. More details will be available soon. We are looking to have another
membership class during the winter months. Be sure to check out the church
bulletin for more details on both these events.
We hope to have more events like the hot dog roast. They are always a good
opportunity to get to know each other better and to bring family and friends who
don't have a church family. Lets look to 2005 as a year to reach out to other's
who are hurting, lost and don't know the love of Christ. Let us also look to
being a support to those hurting within our church. May we be the light God so
wants us to be!
The Lord God is with you. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight
in you. He will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.
Zepheniah 3:17
May you and yours know the peace and love of our Savior Jesus Christ
this coming year.
| Children’s Ministry -- Jane Ziemanski |
We are excited to announce that our New Song Children’s Ministry will now
be referred to as
our “LAMBS”. This acronym fits newborns through 3rd graders: Learning
About Many Bible Stories, but has a different
application for the 4th and 5th grade students: Locating And Memorizing
Bible Scriptures. The Middle School through High School students
has elected to be “THE GOD SQUAD.”
Our young people have been participating in worship displaying the talents and
gifts with which God has wonderfully blessed them. We have heard many
instruments, solos, and group songs. We have enjoyed watching plays, skits, and
motions to the lyrics of special music chosen by the students.
As we begin 2005, the teachers are quite busy preparing their lessons and
gathering materials so the LAMBS and GOD SQUAD can mature in their Christian
walk and will be excited about spreading the Good News to the world.
| Ministry -- Russ Evans (P.A.T. member) | "We Work together in ministry" |
The New Year is upon us, bringing with it new promises and new challenges. It
is exciting to think about all that lies ahead: What will God do in and through
New Song Church in 2005? How will our body of believers make an impact on our
neighbors and on the world? What new ways will we find to care for each other
and build each other up in Christ? Please help us reach new heights in 2005.
There is much to be done and much that is already being done through God's mercy
here at New Song Church. So take a moment, then set yourself to prayer,
reflection and action - the opportunities abound.
Remember that God equips us for his work. First Peter 4:10 says, "Each one
should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God's grace in its various forms." As you are serving, know
that God will equip you to do what ever it is He has put before you--period! So
don't be afraid--prayerfully do what God has called you to do. We have been
called by God, and He has equipped us to accomplish every good work that He has
predestined for us.
| Discipleship -- Barb Laurin (P.A.T. member) | "We Walk people to maturity" |
Bravo to the cell group leaders and the mentors who have been diligently
investing their lives in others since 2001. Our cell groups have been the open
door to bring newcomers and long time attenders into family-like relationships
where lives have been changed. A major part of that change has been due to the
one-on-one mentoring. The mentoring partners meet weekly as they complete a
Bible Study together and just plain enjoy each other’s company. Toward the end
of the mentoring track both the mentor and the protégé attend the
"Encounter God Weekend", which I'll describe later.
Until now, both the cell group leaders and the mentors have had an outstanding
ministry despite the fact they worked without much structure or leadership. It
is my desire to provide not only leadership but also encouragement and support
through our discipleship ministry. As we start the New Year we plan to have the
mentors and cell group leaders meet quarterly for a time of connecting and
encouragement. I will touch base with each mentor and visit each cell group
monthly. We're expecting great things to happen through our mentors and cell
groups this coming year and we want to be prepared to minister to those God
sends our way.
Our recent Encounter God Retreat was, to no surprise of anyone who has ever
attended, another uplifting and wonderful time spent connecting with God. The
retreat center was the perfect setting for time alone with God. It provided a
comfortable place for God to impact lives, and impact lives He did! Just ask
anyone who was there! In attendance was Jane Ziemianski, Li Grunnagle, Mary
Rose, Wendy Scott, Liz Pusateri, Dan Gochnour, Herb Shaffer, Julie Pusateri,
Kelly Kurpecky, and Barb Laurin. Our next retreat will be in the spring. If you
are interested in attending contact me soon. We'll get you started on the
mentoring track which will better prepare you for the retreat and to minister to
those God may bring your way.

As the New Song congregation faced the end of 2004, we knew that the
payments on our mortgage loan on the church property would increase from
approximately $450 per month to $2,000. Since the inception of our
mortgage loan, and in accordance with the terms of this loan, our payments
have been limited to interest only. However, and also in accordance with
our loan, we were to begin paying principal and interest beginning January
2005.

| New Song Celebrates 40 Years ?! |
[editor’s note: Jeff Scott helps us to imagine 27 years into the future.
New Song is celebrating its 40th anniversary in March 2031. Could it be like
this? Enjoy!]
This month marks the 40th anniversary of New Song's first service. Since my
grandfather Herb Shaffer and his family were first called to plant a church in
the South Hills of Pittsburgh, New Song has served the local community in many
ways.
The facts of our history are well documented. The first service was held in
March 1991. Capital campaigns in 1996, 2003, 2007, and 2015. Pastor Herb’s
retirement in 2020. The opening of the new sanctuary 5 years ago. But there is
so much more. Some of you may know of the plaque in the original sanctuary that
reads "Lord, Bless this site to your use. Please use this facility to reach
the lost in the South Hills and the world. Like a light on a hill, let this
place shine brightly as a sign of your Love. Dedicated July 24, 2005". I
sometimes wonder about the people who renovated the original buildings (that's a
little trivia that there were two buildings on the property when it was
purchased in 2003).
You may not know that New Song originally rented space at a local middle school
(Fort Couch Middle School was on Fort Couch Road where the car dealership is
now). They met in that school for 13 years, saving money, and looking for a
permanent home. In 2003 God blessed the congregation with a 3-acre plot on
Library Road.
The first service on the Library Road site was held in mid 2005, with over 150
people attending in a room that seated just 90. There are still 28 people in the
congregation from that inaugural Sunday service.
I talked to a few of those members about the early years. Steve Renz remembers,
"This place was a real dump when we first bought it. We should have torn
the whole thing down, it would have been easier." My grandmother Sheila
Shaffer also remembers how much the congregation wanted a permanent home.
"Even before it was finished we had prayer meetings and cookouts. It was a
big deal to move out of rented space, but it was a lot of work. (Pastor) Herb
and so many others spent hours and hours praying, meeting, planning, and working
on it."
The original project took 2 years and cost nearly $500,000 to complete (a lot of
money in those days). It was estimated that over 7,000 man-hours of volunteer
work was spent renovating the property before the first service was even held.
Were their sacrifices worth it? Since we moved to the location, over 1,000
services were held in the original sanctuary space. 108 couples have been
married here. New Song has been blessed to dedicate 184 babies since then
including my sister Esther and myself. Most importantly, 325 people have
dedicated their lives to Christ and been baptized here. In fact we had our first
“hat-trick” when Hailey Farley was married here ten years ago after
previously being dedicated and baptized at New Song. Over the years we have been
able to host dozens of Christian concerts, parenting classes, cub scout dinners,
Saturday night movies, fund raisers (including our annual dinner for the South
Hills Life Center), square dances, and other countless church and community
events. We have hosted out of town guests for Promise Keepers and Women of
Faith.
It is estimated that almost 2,000 people have come through our doors during the
last 40 years. The numbers can overwhelm you, 4 pastors, 15 church secretaries,
52 PAT members, and 8 missionaries and 12 sent out pastors (including Jayson
Roach and Tanner Morehead) all working to share the Good News. Could we have
done all that from the basement of a middle school?
Our new multi-purpose worship center was finished in 2026 and allows us to seat
300 in climate-controlled comfort. The new classrooms and offices will continue
to provide a platform for continued outreach for years to come. I only hope that
God will continue to bless us and our efforts to reach the people of the South
Hills. I know my grandfather would not want us to give up on New Song's original
focus of "Changed Lives".

On Oct 23 about 35 people attended our 1st Hot Dog Roast/ Worship & Fellowship Time at the new property on Library Rd. It was lovingly organized by Tammy Morehead who had the prayer team pray with her & Ken on site 2 days earlier. Prayers were answered and the rain held off. The food, fire, fellowship, and fun were all great! From age 2 to 72, you could not help but enjoy this time together, taking possession of the Promised Land so to speak. It was our first real all-church gathering there, and many of us did not want the evening to end. Special thanks to Russ Evans and Ken Morehead who entertained with "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival" and some children’s entertainment as well. And to Tom Farley who kept our fire under control, as well as to all who contributed with food and desserts. Tammy shared a wonderful metaphor with me later. As we all faced the fire, the light of the fire reflected our faces in the darkness, allowing those around it to see us more clearly. When we all focus toward Jesus, others can see Him more clearly as He is reflected in us!
In 2004, the Pregnancy Resource Center of the South Hills has (to date)
given 68 ultrasounds to abortion-minded and abortion vulnerable women at
the center.

The New Song Prayer team is determined to "possess the land".
Recently we got some heat and light in the "fireside" room, and
plan to continue to meet there as long as we
October was Clergy Appreciation Month. This year New Song honored Pastor Herb and his family in 2 ways. The first was practical - we collected money for some home repairs for the Shaffer house. Our own New Song men took care of the work, joined by Art Farley, Tom's dad. Thanks to all who took part in this effort that really showed how we can come together as one family. Meeting a practical need is an important part of "being the church". The second way we honored them was by meeting a spiritual need. We need to lift our pastor in prayer. After worship on Oct 24 we read scripture, surrounded the Shaffer family and dedicated them in prayer. Though October has come and gone, we continue to ask that you lift Pastor Herb and his family to the Lord in your daily prayers.

Since 1996 the children’s classes at New Song have been sponsoring 3
girls with their weekly offering collections through the Children of
Promise program; a joint ministry of the Church of God Global Missions,
and the Women of the Church of God. Our $15 each month, per child goes to
buy school supplies, and provide basic health care such as vitamins,
check-ups, and dental care. At Christmas time we send an extra offering so
that a gift can be purchased for each child; often their families will
also received extra food for their Christmas dinner. In the early spring
we receive a personal note and an updated photo from these children
thanking us for continuing to sponsor them. |
