Psalm 98:1 Sing to the Lord a NEW SONG, for He has done marvelous things…

The newsletter of New Song Community Church  Winter 2005 * Vol. 2 No. 7

From our Pastor’s Desk…

Dear Family,

I’ve recently been reading through the account of the Israelites in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. (I’ve read through these many times, but God’s Word is so alive that it speaks every time.) You might already know that these Hebrews had an addiction to complaining. God pointed out to me as I read this time that complaining wasn’t the real problem, but a symptom of something much deeper, discovered only by diving below the surface. They were not punished for their whining and griping and complaining. They were punished for their unbelief. And it appears that the unbelief had at its roots in a lack of passion for things most important.
Consider for a moment - people of passion don’t complain. They live out their passion in the face of opposition and difficulty or in the midst of cooperation and ease. People are drawn to them. They make a difference. NFL players beat each other week after week with a passion for the privilege of extending the beatings extra weeks until they reach the Super Beating, er, Bowl. The passion drives them. If you have a passion, you don’t complain, you live it with a sense of mission and purpose.
The Israelites were so busy looking at the inconveniences because they never caught the passion that Moses had for God, for freedom, for the Promised Land. They saw if from afar, even asking Moses to cover his face when he emerged with a glow from God. Out of that passionlessness, they wandered aimlessly for decades, longing for the onions of Egypt. Really, look it up. Onions, when God offered them a land full of the best produce and meat. Passionlessness blinded them. And does the same today.

Now pick up a mirror. What do you see? A person of passion or … not? In this new year I invite you to a journey of discovering and picking up the passions of God. It is a journey on which God offers the good stuff and where we turn our backs on onions. Won’t be easy, quick or cheap, but it will be well worth it. Here we go…

First, Passion for God through deeper, stronger knowledge of the Bible. It is about knowing Who God is, what He expects, what He promises and offers. Only then can we obey. There are many who claim Christ but live in direct opposition to Him. Sometimes because they choose to do so, but often because they don’t know. Part of this journey will be to understand the distinctions between Biblical Christianity and our culture and live it out.
As we experience a passion for God it will lead us to 3 more.

Second is Passion for Lost People. Yes, people without Christ are LOST. Lost from God, from true peace, joy and contentment. Lost from the church family that provides such meaningful relationships.
But, most of all, they are lost to HELL for all eternity. You see, it is not just a good idea for people to come to Christ; it is the only way to avoid torment forever, forever, forever and forever. Passion for the lost people in our families, our lost friends, co-workers, neighbors is the heart of God and must be our heart. Once lit, this passion will drive what we do personally and as a church.

Third, Passion for the Church as the Bride of Christ. Not the organization, the building or the activities, but as the literal bride of Christ. About serving Him by serving other people in more and broader ways. Simple, every-day ways and big, extraordinary ways.
Some day Jesus is coming back for HIS BRIDE. Think about how a groom approaches his bride. He values, honors, protects, treasures and loves. That’s how Jesus feels about His bride, the Church. If He so treats us, then we must learn to be passionate about the church as well. Not some woman to be used and ignored, but the finest of all ladies to be honored.

Fourth, Passion for removing the “facility obstacle.” I’m not talking about the facility itself, but the reason for a facility at all. We must become passionate about providing a place that removes the barrier in peoples’ minds, that prevents us from reaching the lost and ministering to others. The move cannot be driven by our desire for comfort. God wants every obstacle to His mission to be demolished. By prayer, giving, and working together we can and must do it. This will give us a home base from which to launch the attack on Satan’s strongholds and free those he has captured.

Not one of the NFL players who get to the Super Bowl this year will complain. They live to get there. It is a passion. My prayer and hope is that you will be so impassioned times ten for that which moves the heart of God.
Ready to step into the journey? Here we go, “march, two, three, four…”

"But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. 10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Phil 3:7-14 (NIV)

Renovation Update
by Jeff Scott

We are in the final days of getting the building permit (we hope to have the permit in hand by the time this newsletter is published). This permit will allow us to complete the renovations to the property based on the architect drawings. The sanctuary, 3 classrooms, 2 offices and 2 bathrooms are just a few sheets of drywall and a quick coat of paint away. Well there are a few more steps in there, but the workload at the property will significantly change here in the first quarter. Colin Lewis has joined the renovation team and brings his years of building experience to the team. Colin will be helping us organize work teams as we move forward.

God continues to work in this project. The bank has seen to extending our loan for another 9 months. This will allow us to finish the project without fear of loosing our financing.

The excavating continues to be a problem. The current estimates greatly exceed our budgeted amount. We continue to look for God to show us the path we should take.

Moving forward, our plan is to publish weekly a list of tasks for the coming weeks in the Sunday bulletin and hopefully on the web site.

I cannot repeat it enough; we need your help to finish this project. Not the other people getting this newsletter, you. Let me challenge everyone to give of your time. Consider the 12-3-1 plan. Try to give 12 hours per month by volunteering 3 nights a month for 2 hours each plus one Saturday a month for 6 hours. This could generate 1,500 hours worth of labor in just 3 months.

Each week there will be different opportunities to do different tasks. We know not everyone will be experienced (when we start) but there will always be something to do. Want to tape and mud drywall, your time is coming. Like to paint, get your brush ready. Carrying supplies and handing tools can make the job easier for others. Cleaning up may not be the most glamorous job, but it will be a constant need. From sweeping to removing trash, your work will be appreciated by everyone. If you are inclined to provide snacks or if you want to help with childcare, the need is there. Some people will be putting in long Saturdays, or Sunday afternoons, and your help will allow them to continue to work.

Safety will be our number one priority so we are asking that everyone check in with the 'foreman' when you arrive. We are going to use the Nursery space for most of the organizational stuff. If you go in the front door farthest to the left, the name of the coordinator’s name will be posted. Patience will be on the supply list every day. Whenever you have many people working closely, trying to do the right thing, some people might be offended in some way. Everyone working on this project is volunteering and the devil will be happy to discourage us by making this about our personal feelings instead of God's glory. Talk to me or to one of the shift organizers if you have concerns. We need to remember to encourage each other. Even if you only work for an hour, come do something. An hour of sweeping, or nailing up 2 pieces of drywall may be enough to allow someone else to finish what they are doing or get ready for the next day's jobs. Many hands make light work. Offer each other drinks, thank everyone who is working regardless of the job. Finally PRAY. We still need more things than we can afford at this time. God cannot fail, but we could fall short if we do not seek His will. If you feel led to pray at the property there will always be a prayer area setup to use. Pray for everyone working on the site and all the known and unknown situations that will be encountered.

I can hardly wait to give you an update in 3 months.

Evangelism -- Keith Pusateri (P.A.T. member)  "We Win the Lost"
to do whatever it takes to aggressively reach the unchurched through personal relationships and advertising

Congratulations go out to all those who recently completed the Becoming a Contagious Christian class at the end of October. These members of our congregation, who have now committed themselves to share their faith through building relationships, are now better prepared to witness for Christ in their everyday lives. We as a Church are called and challenged to be ready to care and share in this way as we move onto the new Church property. Please consider accepting this challenge and serving the Lord in this way as He will bring family, friends, and residents of the local communities to visit us at our new facility.

As God's Word teaches in 1 Peter 3:15 "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."
As Christians who are commissioned by Jesus Christ to reach out to those who don't know Him, we need to be educated in practical ways to do this. Another Becoming a Contagious Christian class will be offered in Spring 2005 so get signed up and learn more about how to be more effective at reaching others for Christ.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to the co-facilitators on the Contagious Christian class project. Thank you Gary Opferman for your efforts after long work days and while battling illness. Thank you also for lending you electronics expertise. Thank you Kelly Kurpecky for assistance in teaching the personal testimony parts of the class as well as the tremendous time and effort given to put the class presentation in Power Point format. Ministry effectiveness is greatly multiplied when we work as a team. Thank you for being on my team for this important teaching.

Resources -- Gary Opferman (P.A.T. member)
to provide the physical facilities and resources for Sunday worship and classes and other activities of the congregation

See "Renovation Update" for the update on property renovations.

Fellowship  -- Pam Lakits (P.A.T. member) " We Weep and rejoice in family-like relationships"
to provide opportunities for family-like relationships to grow through cell groups and larger group activities

Thank you to Tammy, Ken and Tanner Morehead and all those who helped with the October 23 "Hot Dog Roast". It was a wonderful night of fun and fellowship. Be sure to read Cathy Opferman’s article for all the fun details.

Coming soon is our Annual Business and Blessings Meeting scheduled for February 19th. More details will be available soon. We are looking to have another membership class during the winter months. Be sure to check out the church bulletin for more details on both these events.

We hope to have more events like the hot dog roast. They are always a good opportunity to get to know each other better and to bring family and friends who don't have a church family. Lets look to 2005 as a year to reach out to other's who are hurting, lost and don't know the love of Christ. Let us also look to being a support to those hurting within our church. May we be the light God so wants us to be!

The Lord God is with you. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. Zepheniah 3:17

May you and yours know the peace and love of our Savior Jesus Christ this coming year.

Children’s Ministry -- Jane Ziemanski
to provide the direction for the Children’s Ministry and give encouragement, training, and support to teachers

We are excited to announce that our New Song Children’s Ministry will now be referred to as our “LAMBS”. This acronym fits newborns through 3rd graders: Learning About Many Bible Stories, but has a different application for the 4th and 5th grade students: Locating And Memorizing Bible Scriptures. The Middle School through High School students has elected to be “THE GOD SQUAD.”

Our young people have been participating in worship displaying the talents and gifts with which God has wonderfully blessed them. We have heard many instruments, solos, and group songs. We have enjoyed watching plays, skits, and motions to the lyrics of special music chosen by the students.

As we begin 2005, the teachers are quite busy preparing their lessons and gathering materials so the LAMBS and GOD SQUAD can mature in their Christian walk and will be excited about spreading the Good News to the world.

Ministry -- Russ Evans (P.A.T. member)  "We Work together in ministry"
to help Christians identify the work God has called them to, train them to do it and place them in the church body in meaningful ministry

The New Year is upon us, bringing with it new promises and new challenges. It is exciting to think about all that lies ahead: What will God do in and through New Song Church in 2005? How will our body of believers make an impact on our neighbors and on the world? What new ways will we find to care for each other and build each other up in Christ? Please help us reach new heights in 2005. There is much to be done and much that is already being done through God's mercy here at New Song Church. So take a moment, then set yourself to prayer, reflection and action - the opportunities abound.

Remember that God equips us for his work. First Peter 4:10 says, "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." As you are serving, know that God will equip you to do what ever it is He has put before you--period! So don't be afraid--prayerfully do what God has called you to do. We have been called by God, and He has equipped us to accomplish every good work that He has predestined for us.

Discipleship -- Barb Laurin (P.A.T. member)  "We Walk people to maturity"
to help Christians grow by being mentored on the equipping track and in cell groups

Bravo to the cell group leaders and the mentors who have been diligently investing their lives in others since 2001. Our cell groups have been the open door to bring newcomers and long time attenders into family-like relationships where lives have been changed. A major part of that change has been due to the one-on-one mentoring. The mentoring partners meet weekly as they complete a Bible Study together and just plain enjoy each other’s company. Toward the end of the mentoring track both the mentor and the protégé attend the "Encounter God Weekend", which I'll describe later.

Until now, both the cell group leaders and the mentors have had an outstanding ministry despite the fact they worked without much structure or leadership. It is my desire to provide not only leadership but also encouragement and support through our discipleship ministry. As we start the New Year we plan to have the mentors and cell group leaders meet quarterly for a time of connecting and encouragement. I will touch base with each mentor and visit each cell group monthly. We're expecting great things to happen through our mentors and cell groups this coming year and we want to be prepared to minister to those God sends our way.

Our recent Encounter God Retreat was, to no surprise of anyone who has ever attended, another uplifting and wonderful time spent connecting with God. The retreat center was the perfect setting for time alone with God. It provided a comfortable place for God to impact lives, and impact lives He did! Just ask anyone who was there! In attendance was Jane Ziemianski, Li Grunnagle, Mary Rose, Wendy Scott, Liz Pusateri, Dan Gochnour, Herb Shaffer, Julie Pusateri, Kelly Kurpecky, and Barb Laurin. Our next retreat will be in the spring. If you are interested in attending contact me soon. We'll get you started on the mentoring track which will better prepare you for the retreat and to minister to those God may bring your way.

Worship -- Wendy Scott (P.A.T. member)
"We Worship the Lord in all things"

to provide opportunities to experience God in corporate worship in a relevant, inspirational way that prepares participants for daily living

This simple graphic can help us to give Jesus the praise in all we do. Use it as a bookmark or hang it on your mirror as a reminder to Worship the Lord in All Things…

Financial Matters -- R.B. Lane, Treasurer

As the New Song congregation faced the end of 2004, we knew that the payments on our mortgage loan on the church property would increase from approximately $450 per month to $2,000. Since the inception of our mortgage loan, and in accordance with the terms of this loan, our payments have been limited to interest only. However, and also in accordance with our loan, we were to begin paying principal and interest beginning January 2005.

Recently, and in acknowledgement of the variety of construction/renovation delays we’ve experienced at the property, Brentwood Bank extended the interest only term of our loan for an additional nine months. Therefore, our monthly loan payments will remain fairly small until the fall of 2005. We can view this development two ways. First, it provides us with some financial breathing room. Second, it is an opportunity to use this respite to redouble our efforts to fulfill our respective building fund pledge obligations. To be honest, overall building fund giving has been somewhat erratic during the past several months. Let’s all do our best to keep our building fund giving up to date. Think of it as a New Year’s resolution.

In terms of the general fund, which covers general operating expenditures, a 2005 budget has been drafted and is in the process of being reviewed and preliminarily approved by New Song’s leadership team. As in years past, the budget will be presented to the congregation for review, discussion, and final approval at the New Song annual meeting. In the next several weeks copies of the budget will be available for your review. If, after reviewing the budget, you have any questions, please give R.B. Lane a call.

New Song Celebrates 40 Years ?!
By Abraham Shaffer

[editor’s note: Jeff Scott helps us to imagine 27 years into the future. New Song is celebrating its 40th anniversary in March 2031. Could it be like this? Enjoy!]

This month marks the 40th anniversary of New Song's first service. Since my grandfather Herb Shaffer and his family were first called to plant a church in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, New Song has served the local community in many ways.

The facts of our history are well documented. The first service was held in March 1991. Capital campaigns in 1996, 2003, 2007, and 2015. Pastor Herb’s retirement in 2020. The opening of the new sanctuary 5 years ago. But there is so much more. Some of you may know of the plaque in the original sanctuary that reads "Lord, Bless this site to your use. Please use this facility to reach the lost in the South Hills and the world. Like a light on a hill, let this place shine brightly as a sign of your Love. Dedicated July 24, 2005". I sometimes wonder about the people who renovated the original buildings (that's a little trivia that there were two buildings on the property when it was purchased in 2003).

You may not know that New Song originally rented space at a local middle school (Fort Couch Middle School was on Fort Couch Road where the car dealership is now). They met in that school for 13 years, saving money, and looking for a permanent home. In 2003 God blessed the congregation with a 3-acre plot on Library Road.

The first service on the Library Road site was held in mid 2005, with over 150 people attending in a room that seated just 90. There are still 28 people in the congregation from that inaugural Sunday service.

I talked to a few of those members about the early years. Steve Renz remembers, "This place was a real dump when we first bought it. We should have torn the whole thing down, it would have been easier." My grandmother Sheila Shaffer also remembers how much the congregation wanted a permanent home. "Even before it was finished we had prayer meetings and cookouts. It was a big deal to move out of rented space, but it was a lot of work. (Pastor) Herb and so many others spent hours and hours praying, meeting, planning, and working on it."

The original project took 2 years and cost nearly $500,000 to complete (a lot of money in those days). It was estimated that over 7,000 man-hours of volunteer work was spent renovating the property before the first service was even held.

Were their sacrifices worth it? Since we moved to the location, over 1,000 services were held in the original sanctuary space. 108 couples have been married here. New Song has been blessed to dedicate 184 babies since then including my sister Esther and myself. Most importantly, 325 people have dedicated their lives to Christ and been baptized here. In fact we had our first “hat-trick” when Hailey Farley was married here ten years ago after previously being dedicated and baptized at New Song. Over the years we have been able to host dozens of Christian concerts, parenting classes, cub scout dinners, Saturday night movies, fund raisers (including our annual dinner for the South Hills Life Center), square dances, and other countless church and community events. We have hosted out of town guests for Promise Keepers and Women of Faith.

It is estimated that almost 2,000 people have come through our doors during the last 40 years. The numbers can overwhelm you, 4 pastors, 15 church secretaries, 52 PAT members, and 8 missionaries and 12 sent out pastors (including Jayson Roach and Tanner Morehead) all working to share the Good News. Could we have done all that from the basement of a middle school?

Our new multi-purpose worship center was finished in 2026 and allows us to seat 300 in climate-controlled comfort. The new classrooms and offices will continue to provide a platform for continued outreach for years to come. I only hope that God will continue to bless us and our efforts to reach the people of the South Hills. I know my grandfather would not want us to give up on New Song's original focus of "Changed Lives".

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

New Song collected 118 shoebox gifts to share with children all over the world. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Great Job!

Dear Pastor Herb, Sheila & friends at New Song,

Thank you so much for the phone calls & the thoughtful fruit basket. I have deeply appreciated everything-and most of all your prayers. Each day has been better than the day before...
Once again, thank you all &
God Bless You,

Diane Lewis

New Song on Fire

by Cathy Opferman

On Oct 23 about 35 people attended our 1st Hot Dog Roast/ Worship & Fellowship Time at the new property on Library Rd. It was lovingly organized by Tammy Morehead who had the prayer team pray with her & Ken on site 2 days earlier. Prayers were answered and the rain held off. The food, fire, fellowship, and fun were all great! From age 2 to 72, you could not help but enjoy this time together, taking possession of the Promised Land so to speak. It was our first real all-church gathering there, and many of us did not want the evening to end.

Special thanks to Russ Evans and Ken Morehead who entertained with "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival" and some children’s entertainment as well. And to Tom Farley who kept our fire under control, as well as to all who contributed with food and desserts.

Tammy shared a wonderful metaphor with me later. As we all faced the fire, the light of the fire reflected our faces in the darkness, allowing those around it to see us more clearly. When we all focus toward Jesus, others can see Him more clearly as He is reflected in us!

Pregnancy Resource Center News

In 2004, the Pregnancy Resource Center of the South Hills has (to date) given 68 ultrasounds to abortion-minded and abortion vulnerable women at the center.

Of that number, 63 CHANGED THEIR MINDS AND CHOSE LIFE FOR THEIR BABIES!

In addition, they have served over 500 clients with counseling, STD tests, parenting classes, post abortion program and material assistance.

They presented their abstinence program to over 36OO public school students!"

New Song Prayer Team Heats Up and Sees the Light!

The New Song Prayer team is determined to "possess the land". Recently we got some heat and light in the "fireside" room, and plan to continue to meet there as long as we can. Prayer starts at about 6:30 pm on Thursdays and runs about an hour.
All are welcome to join. "When we work, we work. When we pray, God works."

Pastor and Family Surrounded

By Cathy Opferman

October was Clergy Appreciation Month. This year New Song honored Pastor Herb and his family in 2 ways.

The first was practical - we collected money for some home repairs for the Shaffer house. Our own New Song men took care of the work, joined by Art Farley, Tom's dad. Thanks to all who took part in this effort that really showed how we can come together as one family. Meeting a practical need is an important part of "being the church".

The second way we honored them was by meeting a spiritual need. We need to lift our pastor in prayer. After worship on Oct 24 we read scripture, surrounded the Shaffer family and dedicated them in prayer.

Though October has come and gone, we continue to ask that you lift Pastor Herb and his family to the Lord in your daily prayers.
Thank you note:
All the Shaffers and “Sheila’s dog” wish to express our sincere thanks to all the men who came over to our house to fix our outside stair railing and make it safe! Thanks also to everyone who contributed to this project. We are grateful for the way the New Song family expressed their appreciation to Herb in such a practical way.

Since 1996 the children’s classes at New Song have been sponsoring 3 girls with their weekly offering collections through the Children of Promise program; a joint ministry of the Church of God Global Missions, and the Women of the Church of God. Our $15 each month, per child goes to buy school supplies, and provide basic health care such as vitamins, check-ups, and dental care. At Christmas time we send an extra offering so that a gift can be purchased for each child; often their families will also received extra food for their Christmas dinner. In the early spring we receive a personal note and an updated photo from these children thanking us for continuing to sponsor them.

Miles Manuel is 8 years old, and lives in the Philippines. She is the youngest of 7 children, and lives in a one room house. We have been sponsoring her since September 2002.

Maria Nagawa is 13 years old, and lives in Uganda, Africa. She has an older brother and two older sisters. Her mother is sick with AIDS. Maria has some difficulties learning in school. We have been sponsoring Maria since 1996 when she was only 4 years old.

Upendo Zakaria is 16 years old, and lives in East Tanzania. Her favorite subject in high school is Math. She lives with her uncle and 3 younger siblings in a mud house with a metal roof. We have been sponsoring her since 2003.

We encourage you to pray with your child for these children and to remind them to bring an offering to help support these 3 girls. The cost to sponsor each child is rising to $25 per month, per child, beginning in January. They are depending on our financial gifts. Any one is welcome to write a note to include in our monthly support. If you have any questions, or would like to view past communications with these children please see Sheila Shaffer.
